Calvert Cliffs State Park
A unique destination, Calvert Cliffs State Park is named after the massive cliffs dating back millions of years. Today, the cliffs “reveal the remains of prehistoric species like whales, sharks, and rays.” The park’s quarter-mile beach sits nestled on the Chesapeake Bay. It offers beautiful scenery, and visitors come to enjoy typical beach activities as well as an afternoon of fossil hunting. In fact, experts have identified more than 600 fossil species in the cliffs, many of which can be found at the park. Common finds include shark teeth and oyster shells.
Breezy Point Beach & Campground
At Breezy Point, you’ll find a sandy beach, a netted swimming area, as well as a 200-foot pier for crabbing and fishing fun. The stunning scenery also draws amateur and professional photographers alike. The best time for picture taking is in the morning, and many come to capture the sunrise from the pier. The beach is also a popular destination for “searching for the lost relics of the Chesapeake.” You may find shark teeth, sea glass, shells, and more.
Rocky Point Beach and Park
Situated at the mouth of the Back and Middle rivers, Rocky Point features one of the nicest beaches on the Upper Chesapeake. Swimmers are welcome at the beach between Memorial Day and Labor Day. Year-round activities include boating, fishing, as well as picnicking.
